CHAPTER 13

The tension rose on the way back to the lake house. It was a long walk, but that did nothing to calm everybody’s emotions. We were one friend short, and the sense of defeat was insurmountable. We were fighting an invisible monster with our hands tied behind our backs—it was impossible. The fear grew as the heat beat down on our backs, and by the time we reached the cabin, we were nearly at each other’s throats.

Walker headed home. He said he needed to find clues about Layla’s whereabouts. He said he needed answers, and it wouldn’t happen sitting around the cabin. I was thankful that he left to do the thing I couldn’t, but as I looked back at the angry bunch before me, I didn’t know how to deal with them alone.

Asher and Noah were particularly upset because Ethan was one of their best friends. Why they took their grief out on each other, I didn’t know. But Asher shoved Noah as we were entering the back porch entryway. He stumbled forward, quickening his step to catch himself. I looked back to Walker climbing in his canoe and pushing off—I’d give anything to be in that canoe.

“Who was the first one in? Answer me that! I was the first one in!” Noah yelled, hammering his chest.

“Stop!” Kimber said in a helpless heap.

“Well, it didn’t do you any good, did it? Did you find him? No! He’s still at the bottom of the lake!” Asher yelled back, his outstretched hand nearly hitting Mason.

I took a deep breath, running my hands through my hair. I paced the length of the kitchen, searching for answers. How does this make sense? How does it fit together? I hated the fact that I hadn’t figured it out yet. That my friends were dying on my watch. If I were smarter . . . if I hadn’t been dyslexic . . . maybe I would have figured it out by now. My shortcomings affected not only me but everyone around me. I felt this huge amount of responsibility that I couldn’t measure up to. I hadn’t been able to save Ethan or Lainey; I hadn’t been able to save Trinity. And I knew that for the rest of the people in this cabin, it was only a matter of time before I couldn’t save them either.

I heard a gasp and spun around on my heels, just in time to see Asher’s fist slam into the side of Noah’s cheekbone.

“No!” I screamed. I rushed forward and then paused as the confrontation continued. Noah was hunched over, his hand to his face, when Asher jumped on his back, bringing him down to the floor. He brought fist upon fist down on his face. Blood splattered, marrying Asher’s fist to Noah’s nose. Noah never had a chance. From the moment he was hit, he never got a punch in, and Asher was relentless.

Scarlett May yelled belligerently. Kimber cried. Kai was still trying to get back home or break ground and discover time travel in his attempt.
